Bertinoro

You can spot Bertinoro from far away. In the centre of the Romagna plain there are two twin hills: one is covered with trees and is very green, called Monte Maggio and the other one is also green but it is enriched with walls, towers and ancient houses, known as Bertinoro town.

Strolling through Bertinoro There are manythings to see and enjoy. Going up the narrow street that leads to the main square, Piazza della Libertŕ,there is the Palazzo Comunale, built by Pino degli Ordelaffi in 1306. For more than six centuries it witnesses the town history. The pre-existing Torre dell’Orologio stands above the building. This building was apparently used as a ”lighthouse” for the sailors, because they could see it from the sea as well as  from the coast . Bertinoro is really a “terrace” above the Romagna plain, as the open space in front of the Palazzo Comunale demonstrates. From here your eyes run free in the direction of the sea, while the "Colonna delle Anella" dominates a short way away. The visitors can walk from the square down to the "Ca' de Bč", where there are also excellent buildings which give testimony historically and artistically. Among Bertinoro treasures one can find a beautiful Bramante-styled Cathedral, where apart from other pieces, a remarkable work of art by an unknown pilgrim, a wooden Crucifix from '500, is kept here.

And the millenary Fortress is really worthy of a visit. In 1177 Federico Barbarossa  was a guest here just like other famous personalities. Then the fortress became the Bertinoro Bishop Palace and at present, among other things, it is the seat of  the “Church Ornaments and Vestments Research and Keeping Centre”, one of the more interesting collections of artistic and above all religious objects and ornaments.
