Cesena

Our
excursion can begin from Piazza del Popolo, the central square of the town (every Wednesday
and Saturday a nice market takes place here). In the centre of the square
there is the beautiful Fontana del
Masini, the artist who
completed and decorated it in 1589. |

|
|
An
attentive visitor can immediately notice something peculiar in this square.
It is missing a side, the one which faces onto Viale Mazzoni. On this
side, a village stood under the lee of the facing Malatesta
Fortress walls till ’800, Borgo Chiesanuova. It was demolished for
hygienic and health reasons. |
|
A
good walk to the Fortress and its beautiful park is suggested. It can be
reached from Piazza del Popolo both through the perspective steps along
the Palazzo Comunale
and through Viale Mazzoni park entrance. |

|
|
Among
smooth paths and through the greenness, there is the Malatesta Fortress,
one of the most beautiful and impressive in Romagna, with its defensive
works and the restored communication trenches. The view is very beautiful
from here. The present look of the Fortress today is a military
fortification thanks to the Malatesta Family and the result of a century
of work.
Its pentagonal plant hugs the hill's slopes and includes two
ramparts: the male keep and the female one, which is the seat of a
beautiful Country Civilisation
Museum. During the summer some exhibitions and shows are held in the
fortress courtyard. |
|
Going
back to the square, by taking via Zeffirino Re a
whole common sweetness of Cesena Arcades
opens up towards an historical well restored centre. It is the town
sitting room, the place where friends can meet and take walks in. |

|
|
At
the end of Via Zeffirino Re there is Palazzo
del Ridotto, the seat of the Art Town Gallery. Behind the Building there is the Malatesta
Library.
Those who appreciate art will find some interesting works both
in the main Churches of the town, starting with the very central Duomo
in Piazza Pia up to the eighteenth century S.
Agostino Church (a short way away from the town centre, in piazza
Aguselli) and in S. Domenico Church
(in viale Mazzoni, in front of the Fortress). The
Cassa di Risparmio di Cesena Ancient
Paintings Collection is remarkable. Visits
can be booked at the bank central seat, in Corso Garibaldi. |
|
A
short way from here there is the Alessandro
Bonci Town Theatre, one of
the most prestigious theatre factories in Romagna. It is dedicated to
a tenor from Cesena. He was fond of "bel canto" and left the
Cesena workshop to go and challenge no less than Caruso at the
Metropolitan of New York |

|
|
A
short way again from Bonci Theatre, and there is via Aldini, in the
ancient and restored Valdoca district. At present, in via Aldini, thre is
the Civic Picture Gallery and the S.
Biagio Cinema Centre have
their seats.
A
nice walk brings one to the ancient Abbazia
del Monte which contains some prestigious works and one of the most
important European collections of votive offerings, the ancient small
pictures made "for favours received" .
